This Working Group produces standards for a "Home Electronic System", that is for control and communications within homes. The scope of this working group includes the control of equipment for heating, lighting, audio/video, telecommunications, security ... in fact, any equipment within the home. It also includes residential gateways between the internal Home Electronic System network and external wide-area networks such as the Internet.
The group also develops standards for similar building management functions in commercial buildings. A major focus of interest has been home and building energy management and connection to smart grids.
Proposed standards may be new specifications or may be based on proprietary specifications, national standards or regional standards. WG 1 includes active participation from a dozen countries. The working group co-operates with other standards bodies dealing with multi-media systems, cabling systems, smart grids and safety.
Working Group 1 is a Working Group of ISO/IEC Joint Technical Committee 1 (JTC 1), Sub Committee 25 (SC 25). JTC 1 is the committee responsible for Information Technology standards under two international standards bodies: ISO and IEC. Both write voluntary industrial standards to foster international trade.
